The goals of this course are to provide the student with theories from the fields of entrepreneurship, small business management, and the major functional areas of business, including management, marketing, accounting, and finance. The text supports theory with over one hundred real-life business examples, featured in boxes and opening profiles. These features have been carefully selected to include a mix of both young, inspiring entrepreneurs and experienced, high-profile business owners. In addition, many boxes have become small to mid-sized cases, with thought-provoking discussion questions to generate student interest in the subject matter.
High school graduation or equivalent; or 18 years of age. A written essay from the student explaining the reasons for interest in the program and how the program can assist the student to meet future goals.
The minimum level of English language proficiency is one of the following:
● English 12- minimum final grade “C” or Cornerstone Placement test – Level 5. (This placement test uses the Placement Evaluation Package Interchange 3 Third Edition and passages second edition from Cambridge.)
Upon completion of this course the successful student will be able to:
● Demonstrate enhanced discussion of the benefits of studying small business and entrepreneurship
● Understand and apply New information on equity financing
● Compose all the sections on market segmentation, target markets, and customer profiles
● Research and enhance coverage of all aspects of the marketing mix
● Demonstrate enhanced information on human resources planning
● Demonstrate new information on the importance of growth in small and medium-sized businesses
Module 1- Introducing business Entrepreneurship and Small Business in Canada- This module demonstrates the enhanced discussions of young and social entrepreneurs, including benefits of studying in small business and entrepreneurship. We will use social media and internet tools to conduct market research in the classroom and in project-based assignments. We will challenge students to analyze social media as a tool in an entrepreneurship approach. 20 hours/total
Module 2 – Organizing a Business – This module explores the importance of business planning. There will be real examples of case studies in the Canadian market as well as expanded information on how to form a company from a sole proprietorship to a partnership to a private corporation. There will be enhanced discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of buying a business. 20 hours/total
Module 3 -Financial Management – This module will explore information on equity financing and financial management, we will challenge students on various forms of payments firms accept and the implications of acceptance. We will further our research on cash flow management by using examples and case studies of existing Canadian businesses. 20 hours/total
Module 4 -Managing Marketing Mix and Marketing Management – This module will help students develop an understanding on market segmentation, target market, and customer profiles. We will focus on all aspects of the marketing mix, identify large amount of information on promotions for small business and understand the power of social media marketing. 20 hours/total
Module 5 – Human Resources Management – In this module, students practice the skill of human resource planning. We will focus on information on the employee selection process, including information on interviewing and recruiting and review the important steps in staffing. We will also identify the importance on leadership and important it is in an organization. 20 hours/total
Approach:
In this workshop course that combines in-class and online activities, students prepare assignments with the guidance of instructors.
Creativity:
Project-based group participation: at least two assignments will be presented orally.
Judgment:
Students will prepare at least four written assignments in traditional and digital genres such as reports, letters, brochures, email, and webpages, and deliver one professionally related informative oral presentation
